2 Year Sire Stag Sale
Our sale this year was held on Wednesday the 9th December 2020,
It was a solid sale - all lots sold, $7026 average.
Thanks to everyone who participated.
COVID has forced the world to a return to basics. And while a reality check has its merits, for venison it has brought about a significant schedule drop. The restaurant trade world-wide has been on the back foot and no marketing plan could have foreseen that. Fortunately though, the European trade with its Sept/Oct, peak has remained relatively intact.
In order to get rising one year olds to make slaughter liveweights in time for this Sept/Oct window we need high growth genetics. Plus we need finishers who capitalise on this growth potential. While the second part shouldn’t be limiting the first part surely is. The deer industry simply cannot overlook the value of high growth BVs. Other BVs are useful at the stud breeder level as our trend graphs show, but for a commercial operation high growth rates (high 12MthBV’s) are what will bring in the money.
There is a limit of course - you don’t want large leggy ill-thrifty hinds. But you can have compact hinds up to 140kg liveweight as long as you can still handle them without any grief.
The economics of farming a larger hind in order to get larger weaners and achieve slaughter weights by Sept/Oct is absolutely compelling. It’s just a matter of tweaking the stocking rate a bit and you can be financially ahead by a large amount.
Hind adult size was the topic of discussion at our AP Field Day in June and there was no doubt that the extra 0.4kgDM/day winter maintenance feed required by a 140kg hind (compared with a 110kg hind) was a relatively minor cost when the benefits were taken into account. Benefits now being realised by us as we are getting early October weights for both our R1 cull hinds and stags averaging over 60kg cwt at a schedule price of $7.10/kg cwt.
The ‘BVs in Practice’ project confirms what we all know, progeny growth is highly correlated to 12mth BV. It was nice to see this confirmed with our stags at Dave & Ali Seifert’s property. It was also surprising how well a stag sired by Tongariro performed relative to his BV. This has been a feature of this lineage with Ruahine and The Scotsman also performing above expectations. Additionally these deer are compact with good temperament - something we have been aiming for long term.
This year’s sale is the first to offer the Bidr off-site livestream bidding as well the normal on-site farm bidding. In recognition of this are offering free transport for purchasers buying two or more stags.
Thanks for taking the trouble to read this. As always, you can buy with confidence as we stand by our product.
